The Cameraman

This is me, this picture, more so than

the life I led—the only picture of a man

of pictures, even though from the other side

of the camera I am in thousands. They say I hide

behind the box—my customers—and wonder

whether by chemical magic I capture their

image, some complicated process, or if

like some buffoon I just point and click the stiff

button and the camera does all the work. I can’t

tell them it is neither and both—they won’t

listen to my description of light and how

the lens, the flash and silver nitrate are now

brushes to my canvas—this poet’s pen—

and they are potter’s clay within my ken.
